Hero MotoCorp in its 27 years of existence has become a name to reckon with. One of the leading motorcycle manufacturers in the world, Hero MotoCorp has throughout been maintaining exceptional sales records. Known for their comfortable and reliable motorbikes, Hero MotoCorp became a name that was adored by people from all age groups. Needless to say that this would not have been possible without the technical support and exceptional Honda engines that propelled the company to position itself as the market leader. As we all know, this winning partnership ended last year and left Hero group to fend for itself on the technological front. Therefore, in order to fulfill its dream of coming up with an all new Hero product Hero MotoCorp recently announced its tie up with Austrian engineering major AVL(Anstalt für Verbrennung skraftmaschinen List), to develop a new range of engines that will propel Hero MotoCorp into the future.
AVL has been instrumental in bringing up the new series of Royal Enfield engines and was also the name behind the new 2.6 litre engine for Mahindra Scorpio.
Hero MotoCorp also indicated the plans of extending the cubic capacity of its engines beyond the present 225cc.Meanwhile, here is what Pawan Munjal, the Managing Director of Hero MotoCorp, has had to say about Hero’s association with AVL Austria, “We have tied up with AVL to develop our in-house capabilities in engine technologies. A team from our R&D division is already in Austria. Our team is also working in close coordination with AVL India Technical Centre based in Gurgaon. The team is working on a few options across motorcycles and scooters. We would be developing engines of all sizes to make new products and also refurbish the existing product lines. Gradually we will develop our own full-scale R&D facility to make products for global market on our own. The multiple technology and engineering would leapfrog to the next level even as we internally enhance our R&D to make products for trans-continental markets. - source (economic times)."
It would also be important to mention that Hero MotoCorp also had a tie up with North American racing outfit Erik Buell Racing, which was instrumental in producing Harley engines under the Buell brand, for technology sharing. Hero plans to imbibe engine technologies from both small and large capacity Buell bikes. The first launch from this partnership is expected to be around 2013.Hero MotoCorp will also enter the 2012 AMA Motorcycle Racing Championship in which Erik Buell Racing’s EBR1190RS motorcycle will be raced under the Hero banner.
Meanwhile, here’s what Pawan Munjal, Hero MotoCorp Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, has had to say about this latest development, “We are entering into a strategic partnership with Erik Buell Racing (EBR), which currently is more into high end and high performance racing bikes, as we are completely missing in this category of motorcycles. We have already started work on some of our existing products and also on completely new products. I would tend to say that by calendar 2013 (a product will be launched). As stated in the past, we will not replace the current technology (Honda’s) with just one technology source or Technology, Company or partnership, but we are looking at multiple technology tie-ups to go for specialised technologies wherever available. Ultimately, the idea is to build our own R&D capabilities to match the best in the world."
Stay tuned for more.
